Reading the Text: Haftarah Zachor VII
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays, Portion of the Week
No Comments
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: And Shmuel said to Shaul; even if you are small in your own eyes, you come from the smallest Binyamin, and Binyamin has history with Yehudah. Because the Gemara says then when the time came to cross the Red Sea, Binyamin jumped into the water to be first and the Yehudah stalled them so they could be first and that’s why the first was Nachshon ben Aminadav from the tribe of Yehudah, because they stopped Binyamin, the same way the first king was from Binyamin, Shaul, and the second king, the real king is from Yehudah, David. Yehudah feels they should go first and Benyamin the younger is less important. Another story, the Concubine in Giibeah is also a fight between Yehudah and Benyamin .
So you think you’re small in your own eyes, you have an inferiority complex, but you’re the head of all the tribes of Israel, God anointed you king over Israel. Which is interesting because in the first verse of the haftarah whose the one who anointed him? Shmuel.
Remember: it’s not clear with whom Shmuel is angry. There’s a little indication here: Hashem sent you on your way. And he said, go and destroy these sinners, Amalek, you should fight with them, until you finish them off. Really? Did God ever say that? No, He never refers to them as sinner. He may have sent the same message but not in those words. Shmuel is making changes
Why did you not listen in the voice of God? And you saved the spoils, and you did that what was evil in the eyes of God.
Shaul said to Shmuel, I listened to God, and I went in the path that God sent me, I brought Agag the king of Amalek. and Amalek I destroyed. He’s arguing that he’s innocent and when he argues it he says I destroyed Amalek and not Agag. Is that the way to argue?
Obviously this is Shmuel proving that he was right. He’s saying if you listened clearly to me you would have got it, because that was the message I was telling you. The fact hat you didn’t know what you really should have done means you weren’t really listening in the first verse. He’s now making it more clear because Shaul never listened. That’s why Shmuel says to Shaul, Silence! Listen to what Hashem has spoken. Why does he need to say that? Because he understands that Shaul didn’t listen.

Rav Chaim Vital on Ad d’lo Yada
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays, Music of Halacha
A person is obligated to drink on Purim until he no longer knows the difference between “cursed Haman” and “blessed Mordechai.” (Megilla 7b)
That which our Rabbis, of blessed memory, have said, that a person is obligated to drink on Purim until he no longer knows the difference between “cursed Haman” and “blessed Mordekhai” – this means as follows: It is known that in every kelipa there is a spark of holiness that gives it life, and should it be removed, [the kelipa] will be left with no vitality and immediately it will totally disappear.
Now on this great day, when there is this great illumination, we want the vitality of this illumination to reach this spark as well, but not that it should reach so far to illuminate the kelipa. For this reason a person must get drunk on this day, to the point that he does not know the difference between “cursed Haman” and “blessed Mordekhai.” For he may err and give a blessing to that spark in the kelipa, and it too will be blessed, but its blessing will not have perfect intention, for if it would have, it would receive a great deal and the kelipa would also be blessed.
[Alternate reading: Therefore he must say "blessed Haman," to draw light also to that spark, and therefore he must say it without intention, since he is drunk and has already lost his mind. For were it with intention, God forbid, it would also illuminate the kelipa.] (Peri Etz Chayyim, Sha’ar Rosh Chodesh, Chanuka U-Purim, ch. 6)

Reading the Text: Haftarah Zachor VI
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays, Portion of the Week
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: “Shmuel woke up order to greet Shaul early.” He was crying the whole night, so I don’t know how he woke up early, he must have fallen asleep. “And it was told to Shmuel saying, Shaul has come to Mount Carmel and he’s building there an altar so he turned and he went down to the Gilgal.
So Shaul is building an Altar on Mount Carmel. Know the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel? The verse there says that he rebuilt a broken Altar? Which broken Altar? It’s Shaul’s!
If he’s building an Altar to offer a sacrifice does he think he did anything wrong? Note where is he building the Altar? To Gilgal? Why does he go to Gilgal? Because one of the places the Mishkan was at Gilgal so to honor the place where the Mishkan once stood he wanted to be in that area. He obviously feels the place has holiness even if the tabernacle isn’t there.
This a man who is sensitive and is aware of what he’s doing and pays attention to details.
So Shmuel went to Shaul, and Shaul said, I bless you in the name of God. I kept the word of God.
Is this a man who did something wrong? Unless he’s a liar but it doesn’t make sense that he think he can outsmart a prophet.
Shmuel says: why do I hear sheep, and my ears hear to pick up the sound of some cattle? (We know that Shaul had at least 210,000 sheep to count his soldiers, so why would Shmuel be surprised by the sheep? And if you say because Shaul went to Gilgal, and did not bring all the sheep; Why did Shaul go to Gilgal? To offer sacrifices. Of course, he has sheep!)
So Shaul says, I brought them from the Amelekites, the nation had mercy on the best of the sheep and the cattle in order to sacrifice them to God, your Lord, and whatever was left, we destroyed.
What stands out here? He has no hesitation saying he got them from Amalek. That the nation has mercy, he’s leaving himself out. In verse 9 it says Shaul and the people has mercy. He leaves out himself. Now does it mean that he’s lying? Why is he leaving it out?
And Shmuel says to Shaul I want you to pay attention so I can tell you what God said to me this past night. Shaul says to him speak: is this a man who has a guilty conscience?
I want you to look at one thing. Vayomer- is how I read it- and he said. How is it actually written in the book? Vayomeru - they said. It’s written one way but we read it another. There are few verses that are written one way but are read another. It’s through mesorah- a tradition passed down. It has incredible implications whenever there’s a switch.
This is an interesting thing. Shmuel doesn’t say to Shaul, Well God said. He says, listen I want you to listen to what I have to say and he waits for Shaul to say okay. So Shmuel obviously understands that Shaul thinks all is fine. So he asks the king’s permission to speak for God, and understands Shaul will say yes. Shaul is dealing with personal things and thinks everything else is okay.

Esther’s Purim Part Seven: Of Dogs and Lions
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: There’s an unbelievable Gemara about Esther. The psalm 22, is the psalm of Esther going into Achashveirosh to seduce him and when he stuck out his scepter it wasn’t his scepter. Had she gone in before Mordechai asked her to no one would’ve known, it had to be said that Esther wasn’t the one to save the Jewish people. As long as she was told she was needed then everyone would say she was doing it and not God. and Esther was the only one who knew something would happen and she was waiting. She didn’t get upset when it happened she said to Mordechai forget it. This woman has so many layers, she’s considered the greatest woman in the bible, she said so.
It says that as she walked into Achashveirosh’s the divine inspiration left her, so she felt abandoned by God- and she says my lord my lord why have you abandoned me? So he says to her you refer to him as a dog. Right before the verse says he a dog, and the Gemara says he was, he was fat, hairy and he smelled bad. Then the passuk says she says I’m sorry, she says saves me from this dog, but when she changed it to save me from the lion the ruach ha kodesh came back.
What this is doing is, okay but he’s a dog and holding her nose and do it, and God says don’t do me any favors and think that I need you, you have to understand that this is so much your moment you have to see him as a lion, you have to love the moment so much he’s a lion, whatever goes into your moment has to be precious. It’s frightening!
Purim is the moment that provides you with the strength and passion to live your life. You know I have a spiritual diary, the most awesome transformations take place after a good Purim. It’s frightening. I remember… I never write, but Purim 1981, between Purim and Pesach I wrote like 25 pages on something on Chumash. Its just Purim gives you incredible stuff, but you have to work on it and daven for it before hand. If you drink and get high, not drunk and learn, and talk about Purim etc. then that’s when you receive these insights.
Shaloch maanot is two ready to eat food to one person. And matanot le evyonim has to be twice as much as you give to shalach manot. The whole idea of giving to who gives you or caring how fancy it is, defeats the idea of purim.. is anti-Purim. You should send to those you want to fix with.

Esther’s Purim Part Six: Weinberg’s Three Rules
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: If you pray to God to have an “Esther’s moment” on Purim, it’s always transformational. The only way you won’t have a transformational Purim if you’re not ready for it the whole idea is to loose daat. There’s no difference in answering people the way you normally would and the way Shaul responded to God.
And you must understand there can be no oral law if you have too much daas, because if you only want to see the world the way you see the world then you cant use Gods Torah, because your locked into something. You need binah. And who has binah yaterah? Extra binah? Women and that’s why the whole miracle of Purim has to be affected by a woman.
On Purim by losing your daas, God will transform you. You make yourself into a vessel to receive Gods’ influence, say I’m willing for you to being charge, not for me to be in charge and you literally make you a vessel to receive on Purim and if you get it you do. The only Purim’s you don’t work are the ones you don’t work at it.
It unbelievable you will change because you will have learned to make yourself into a vessel. Esther is the only one who said I don’t give a damn about defining myself she thinks I don’t care.
Purim is where I got my three rules of life:
This is really Esther’s response to Hamman. Of course you’re not going to define yourself Hamman because you’re always thinking of the broader picture. You compare your perspective to God its nonsense so stop just worry about moments when you have your opportunities.

- Success is not always an outcome of planned success, and
- if I fail to respond to an opportunity I rejected the first two rules.

Esther’s Purim Part Five: Shaul and Esther
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays, Portion of the Week
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: Listen to Esther, according to the midrashim, Esther’s father died the minute she was conceived, her mother died the minute she was born, she was raised by Mordechai. The Gemara says Mordechai nursed her. So whether it means he physically nursed her. The idea is the relationship between Esther and Mordechai is one of total dependence.
Listen to the way the passukim describe Esther, Esther wouldn’t tell anyone her nation or her birth, meaning that she was a descendant of the king. Because Mordechai told her not to.
Esther comes in, she is brought to the king she doesn’t ask for anything, she’s brought in on the coldest day of the year. To Achashveirosh enjoys a warm body more than he usually would, the passuk says when he wanted to experience her physically as a virgin she felt like a virgin. When he wanted to experience her as a non virgin she felt like an experienced woman. Whatever he wanted her to feel like during intercourse she felt like. What does it tell you about Esther?
The Gemara is saying that obviously it’s not literal, but its trying to portray Esther in a certain way. Whoever looked at Esther saw in Esther whatever he wanted in a woman. What else did the Gemarah say, that she was green. And green is understood like last week, green is the color of chance. Why is a leaf green?
What idea does it give you about Esther? That she’s the perfect woman. The king is going crazy to find out who she is. He makes party in her honor she still won’t say who she is, he raises taxes in her honor and she still wont say who she is, he gives out gifts in her honor and still won’t.
Achashveirosh says to Mordechai what do I do about this woman she won’t talk. So Moderchai says why don’t you bring another woman to the house and then shell talk because jealousy will make a woman talk. He brings in more women but Esther will not say a word about where she comes from.
Her personality is exactly the same as her ancestor Shaul, she is a tzanua.
The decree is sent out to kill the Jews, Mordechai sends a message to Esther I want you to go to the king to ask for mercy. So Esther says I can’t do that, whoever goes into the king who hasn’t been summoned will be killed, I can’t do it. Mordechai says to Esther, what? You’re going to try and protect your own hide and not the Jewish people? What do you expect him to say, if you don’t do it your going to be killed so of course you’re going to do it. He says if you don’t go in well be saved anyway we don’t need you and you and your ancestors will be destroyed.
Instead of saying we need you go in, he says we don’t need you well be saved by someone else. But you and your ancestors will be destroyed. And who knows maybe it was for this minute that you became the queen. Who knows? I don’t know.
He doesn’t say it’s a sign from God.
So Esther says to Mordechai, go and I want you to gather to gather all the Jews who live in Shushan, and fast for me, not to repent, but to fast for me. So I’m going to the king, so Mordechai goes and he does everything that Esther had commanded him.
You know who named it and commanded it and making it part of tanach? Esther. If she were Shaul she would not have gone into Achashveirosh, this is the tikun of Shaul, she could be a tzanua, but the minute she has an opportunity, and even though she is not sure, and even if it’s a total change of personality, she does it. Meaning she’s willing to take off one mask and wiling to put on another.
Esther is saying I have no idea if this is why God made my queen, I don’t know it could be a coincidence. But it doesn’t matter, I live my life not by defining my life, or defining myself a tzinua, or assertive queen. I don’t want to define anything I have one question. This moment, I live my life for immediate moments of accomplishment. I do not focus on defining myself for one moment. All the chance that exists in the world exists only for moments that are afforded to me, and it is the moments that are real, I’m not saying it permanent or definitive. I’m not. Of course God know what’s going to happen, God’s going to save the Jews no matter what. Maybe this is my moment maybe not. But who gives a damn, if it is I certainly want to be there.
This is the only question that a human being has. God will get out of me what ever he wants the only question is do I take advantage of moment that are afforded t me. And the only way to be ready for moments of change and growth and total metamorphosis, is to loose my data, self awareness. Daas is knowing how I fit into the world, community etc. and that’s why on Purim you drink until you don’t know.
And because God controls the world, does God get something good out of Hamman or not? Is there any difference between blessing Mordechai and cursing Hamman? No, it’s the same thing because it all depends on your perspective. That’s why you drink until you don’t know the difference between blessing Mordechai and cursing Hamman. It doesn’t mean that you get bombed out it means, daas, you stop worrying how people see you, you simply worry about the moment that’s right there and what happens on Purim as you reach out to someone and give them shalach manot and worry about that connection. Don’t worry about the past, what someone thinks, you just give and enjoy that moment of connection as being real and slowly you loose you daas.
If you look at someone the same way you have to look at someone in a new way, that’s why you need to drink on wine, you need to step beyond your daas, not get bombed. If you eat the meal the same way your at every other day it wont affect you.

Purim Seudah Conversations 1997: Part Four
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays
Transcribed by Anna Beller: The Rambam says that because there is Halacha when Moshiach comes we’ll have the 5 Books of Moses and the Book of Esther. Because you can’t have the 5 books of Moses without Esther, you have no oral law, you have nothing without Esther!
The Rambam Hilchot Megila, perek beit Halacha yud bet- all the books of the prophets and scriptures will be cancelled during the Messianic era except for the Book of Esther, she will exist in the same level as the 5 books of Torah…
And that the law of Torah she be al peh. And even though people’s memory of all their suffering will go away, it says in the verse, all the suffering will be forgotten but the days of Purim will not. And by the way this is the only holiday that has two days. If you live in a regular city its on the 14th of Adar, but if you live in a city where there was a wall when Joshua entered the land of Israel hen you keep it on the 15th. Why should we keep two separate days for a holiday? Unless there was a wall at a time of Joshua, Shushan had no wall, and there was no Shushan when Joshua went in.
Doesn’t that mean your treating Jews differently? Because you experience the miracle on one day and another experiences it on another? Yes exactly! Because you experience it one way and another an other way, you must have 2 separate holidays. Why Joshua? because he was the first one to fight Amalek successfully. Go through mesechet megilah you find the pride of everyone who speaks is Yehoshua.
Why Joshua? Why walls? What do they have to do with it? Barriers.
Where else do you have laws with walls? A city that had a wall at the time of Joshua, if you sell the property there are laws with redeeming the land differently than cities after Yehoshua. What do the laws with the walls have to do with this? We obviously want to be in Israel but where ever we live we are able to incorporate the most beautiful parts from where we live into our Judaism. The Sephardim are different and have Spanish influences into their culture. German Jews are different, and the beauty of them is very Germanic. The customs are different by the cultures, and its good because how else do you evolve. And different languages are different perspectives on the world. The only time that the Torah is considered explained well, According to Rashi was when Moshe wrote it in 70 languages. What else does the word Beear mean? Water. When else do we have it? With Moshe with the rock when it turns into a well. Moshe’s failure was at a beear, because he wasn’t open to creativity at that point.
We want people to experience great creativity, and then the fear of losing God through your creativity, so that one can appreciate halacha. That’s all that halacha is, halacha is a way to anchor yourself in your search for insights. Because there is no one law that you can ever finish. There’s so much literature on each law you can never finish. So to achieve insights, the purpose of law is to anchor you. You have insights and what are you going to do with it. So you learn it and how to translate it into action? The point of halacha is the action but it’s a completely different experience of halacha. Halacha is a way to translate everything that is a constant system that feeds itself.
First you have to understand and recognize that God wants you to be a human being, that’s the whole idea. You need to make a choice to live, Torah is a source of life. God says live even if you have to break the Torah to live, live. God wants you to live.
Mordechai was never accepted by all the Jews, they were worried about him they were scared. They didn’t like Esther either, she forced herself. What other religion would say that a woman slept with a non-Jewish man they had a boy and that boy built a temple. And the temple they named an element called Shushan, so that everyone knew the story, that the king that allowed it to be built. That’s something I would hide.
The whole idea is to have input from an outsider. People don’t talk about this because it terrifies them.
God says over and over, the only thing He cares is if you make a choice. The first thing you need to do is learn to choose. The point of the Torah is to teach you have to choose. Before you learn Torah you must become someone who knows how to make a choice. Committing yourself to wanting to make real and important choices, Elijah the prophet says you can’t stand on two branches serving God and serving Baal, you have to choose one. He just wants them to make a decision. Because those who make choices you’ll grow and that’s the most important thing. You must articulate your choices for it to have an unbelievable difference. Say it’s more important for me to stay up at 1 o’clock in the morning and learn megilath Esther than it is for me to get more sleep.
Purim is about making yourself a vessel, a vessel able to use the Torah. You have to be prepared for the Torah to come inside you and work well. When I read a novel it is more important for me to read this novel than it is for me to read the sefer. And I’ll end up reading the sefer. But when I really want to read the novel, I don’t say it.
You have to love what you do. Just like Esther had to “love” sleeping with Achashveirosh.

Esther’s Purim Part Four: Saul and David
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays, Portion of the Week
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: Now you have Shmuel but we have questions:
Why does he say the sin of predicting the future is bitter, what’s he talking about netzach yisrael. What happened to Shaul? A few hours ago he couldn’t stand up to the Jewish people and now he’s ripping the coat off of a prophet of God?
What does Agag mean by the way? On Gods roof. Who’s the person who has perspective of what going on? God who stands above. Cynthia Ozick wrote a story that had something to do with going through a million roofs. And there was a person who was able to understand everything that was going on simply by being on top of the roof.
You all know that the person who is a better man than you. Who becomes his friend David, and he was better than he. Lets just talk about one story about David. That at the end of his life, God said do not fight until you hear the angels, and the plishtim are approaching ad the angels are not moving, and David will not move his sword, and the plishtim will not move his sword, the angels are not moving and David did not move. And it wasn’t until the swords were actually touching, that the angels move the trees, David heard the trees and he fought back. He would not move until he was supposed to.
See the difference between the two? It’s unbelievable. Shaul understands that its David, and what does he spend the rest of his life doing? He tries to kill him but he knows. He spends the rest of his life trying to kill David and he tries to prevent what the prophet would say would happen from happening. What does Shmuel say? God is not a man he doesn’t change his mind, he doesn’t lie. And yet what does Shaul try to do? Change the facts on the ground.
The day before Shaul dies, he knows the next day he’s going to fight against the plishtim. And he doesn’t know if he’s going to win or if he should fight the battle or not because the plishtim have the most incredible army. So he doesn’t know what to do. So he goes to a woman who contacts the dead and he practices and art called Kessem, trying to predict the future. And he calls up Samuel from the dead and Samuel says tomorrow you will go into battle and you will die and your sons will die and you will lose the battle. Here is a man who spent the last 17 years trying to control his future. And the next day he goes into battle, even though he knows he’s going to lose and die.
A heavenly voice comes out and says to the angels, see what a beautiful creation I have.
What was it that Shmuel said to him. The sin of trying to predict the future. What’s the connection between the two its like trying to be a navi. But look at what he’s trying to control. How did Shmuel know that one day he would try to contact, how did he know to stress the Netzach yisrael, or to stress the fact that God doesn’t change his mind, or adjust you cant change what happening. We know what God is saying and he didn’t say that.
The answer is very simple: when Shmuel said to him, you may want to be small but event though you want to be small God wants from you to be big, and circumstances are clear that God wanted to be big. But how did you see yourself? Small, God wanted you to be big and that the position that put you in and demanded from you to be assertive and aggressive but you didn’t do it because its not in your personality.
So if you have a choice between being whom you want to be or whom God wants you to be, which one are you going to choose? There’s only one way that it’ll work, because circumstances are going to keep on coming to you that will force you into situation and you will eventually destroy yourself.
There’s only one way to protect your own view of yourself and that is to control the future. The only way that you can be exactly the person you want to be is if you can control everything that happens to you. You know what you’re going to end up trying to contact the dead to see the future in order to know what to do.
Listen to the conversation between David and his wife Michal. David is dancing in honor of God and he returned the ark to Jerusalem. So Michal the daughter of Shaul, the only time it mentions this, goes out to greet David and says how much honor you received today, now that everyone saw your tushy when you were dancing and your skirt went up in the air, that’s a lot of honor! Come on that’s not the way for a king to dance or preserve his dignity.
And David said to Michal, in front of God, who chose me over your father’s house, and all over your father’s family, to make me the prince over the Jews, I would loose even more of my dignity, and I will be even lower, and I will be low in front of God. Why do I need honor from any one else? I just need to be low in front of God.
What’s this exactly the opposite of? Michal says preserve the dignity. David says I have the chance to bringing Gods arc and I’m going to be concerned with dignity? Instead of doing what right? Are you crazy. That’s what he said that’s what destroyed his father. He was concerned with you people perceived him, what they thought of him and that’s what destroyed him.

Reading the Text: Haftarah Zachor V
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays, Portion of the Week
Transcribed and prepared by Anna Beller: “The word of God came to Shmuel saying, I regret that I made Shaul the king, he turned away from Me, he did not keep My word.”
Does it say what Shaul did?
“And Shmuel was angry, and he cried out to God the entire night. What was he crying out? For mercy for Shaul. Does God answer him?
The next verse, “and Shmuel woke up early,” to go to Shaul. Did God tell Shmuel to go and speak to Shaul? God didn’t tell him to. But Shmuel is angry and assuming he’s angry with Shaul. Even though he’s angry he’s crying out to God. He’s davening for him and by the way Shmuel is one of the most powerful prayers in the world: “Moshe ve aharon bekohanov u shmuel bekorei, shimo, korim el hashem,” Moshe and Aaron with their priest, Shmuel calls out to God and when he calls out God answers. Shmuel has an incredible power of prayer. And he’s crying out, and this is one of the 13 forms of prayer, crying from the gut, a desperate cry of God, it’s not typical. When you cry “God please help me!”
“And the word of God came to Shmuel saying I regret that I made Shaul the king, he has turned away from me, turned from following Me, and My words he did not fulfill.” Whose mistake was this? Gods! Which is a whole thing in itself, the first time He says this was when he said He regrets “making the world,” said just before the flood. We exist from Gods will. What He doesn’t want is no longer a reality. So when God says this, Shaul is no longer king.
Why is Shmuel “angry”? He’s not sad or broken? Why angry? You said to me to make Shaul to be the king, now You say You regret that You ever made him king. You regret? You didn’t know before? What was this all? Not necessarily that he’s angry with Shaul.
If God regretted he did it then what did he do it for? This is the only failure that told. I regret means that’s the things are undone. It never happens. When God says He regrets building the world, He destroyed the world.
What did it mean when they had mercy on Agag? They gave him a certain amount of freedom. That’s why the first verse says he’s captured when they say they had mercy he had the opportunity to sleep with a maid servant and the great grand child was Hamman. Which is why they call him “aggagi.”
Shaul had reason to believe God didn’t want him to kill the king, because the instructions do not include the king, it says, “kill everybody,” but may exclude the king. There’s a difference between kill Amalek and “kill Amalek’s king.”
God doesn’t say to Shmuel what Shaul did wrong. Maybe it wasn’t Agag. Maybe it’s the cattle. In fact, God never gets angry over Agag. You have to realize this isn’t a silly story; you’re discussing the inner tension of what it means to be a human being. The basic fight between good and evil. It’s inside us. It’s not just you should’ve killed the king and you didn’t, he didn’t kill the animals but kills the people. There’s something wrong there’s something raging inside Shaul. Let’s wait until he begins to speak.

Purim Seudah Conversations 1997: Part Three
by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays
Transcribed by Anna Beller: Chapter 8, verse 1. When do we celebrate Pesach? The day we were saved not when we rested. The Jews had Nissan from Pesach, 10 months until the war. They did not rest, they did not relax until the war. It means with the death of Hamman they were not happy, with Mordechai in the palace they still did not feel secure. They waited a year and whatever was done that year was used to prepare them physically and spiritually for the battle. Esther understood on her own Pesach time but that’s not what Purim is, if it was only Esther and Mordechai it wouldn’t be the Jewish people. It says the Jewish people reaccepted the Torah, and they didn’t do that until they won the war. Why didn’t they do it after Hamman was killed. It’s awesome. Esther becomes the queen she manipulates the whole thing, its fantastic. She hides the fact that she’s Jewish and that her ancestor prepared the execution of Hamman’s great great grandfather, I mean the whole thing is unbelievable and Hamman is hung on he tree which he erected for the hanging of Modechai. It’s unbelievable. And they’re still not happy, they don’t accept the Torah until after they’ve rested from winning the war. And they don’t even celebrate winning the war. And how do they celebrate by sending gifts to each other. There’s obviously much more here than what meets the eye.
Judaism by definition means that things evolve. Other wise there’s no point to say the world will exist for an x amount of years, it means that we will reach appoint. Because otherwise the whole idea of creation is ridiculous. Because then God is a complete failure.
Esther was able to affect total creativity while reinforcing the original commitment. That’s why the greatest accomplishment of the group leaders was the men of the great assembly who were X by Esther.
The Passuk says, it refers to Esther, the morning gazelle. Who’s the morning gazelle? Esther. Why? Just as the morning is the end of the evening, so to Esther is the end to all miracles. It should be the opposite. Esther should be the evening. Unless you say its only morning when you have no more miracles. Why is she called the morning if she’s the end of miracles? An age of miracles is in the time of darkness. Splitting of the red sea, 7 Gideon.
That’s why Esther had to lose her divine inspiration when she went into Achashveirosh. It was for her to understand that it’s not God Who decides to give or not give her divine inspiration, she is the one. And the definition of divine inspiration is the ability to articulate what you already know. Divine inspiration is that you already posses all the information, but you have the ability to articulate.
