The King At The Door
Aug 12th, 2011 by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Spiritual Growth
Kings do not touch doors. They do not know that pleasure of pushing open in front of you, slowly or brusquely, one of those big familiar rectangular panels, and turning back to close it in its place again – holding a door in your arms. The Pleasures of the Door by Francis Ponge
Msr. Ponge, I thank you for the idea, but I respectfully disagree. I don’t want to go to King David who was certainly a door, or at least, tent flap opener. I believe that even greater than the pleasures of a door, is the pleasure of being a king who can and will open and shut doors.
Most believe that Tisha B’Av is a time of shut doors. Exile certainly slams the door of opportunity shut in the faces of the exiles. But, already at midday, we raise ourselves off the floor, and begin to open the door to the future. The seven weeks between Tisha B’Av and Rosh Hashana are called the Seven Weeks of Nechama: Each week represents another step on the path from destruction to the endless possibilities of Rosh Hashana.
Now is when we can all become “door openers”, and by virtue of recognizing our ability to rise from the destruction and mourning of the past three weeks, we become as kings.

The 50 days between Tish’a b’Av and Rosh HaShannah seem to pose a parallel to the earlier 7 weeks encompassing S’firat HaOmer, the Counting of the Omer.
During S’firat HaOmer, Ahm Yisrael built on their Physical Redemption to ascend to the Spiritual Redemption by initiating a 50 Step program.
After Tish’a b’Av we take a breath and enact a 50 step program that takes us out of the commemoration of the desolation and feeling of abandonment and gives us a new lease on physical and spiritual life.
“Lama laNetzakh tish’ca’kheinu, Ta’azveinu l’orech yomim”(Eicha5;20)-Why,Master of the World,do you seem to forget us for eternity, abandoning us for so long? The answer is in the next verse(Eicha 5;21)”Hashee’veinu HaShem eilecha v’Na’shuvah, Khadeish yomeinu c’kedem”Bring us back to You and we will return, Renew our relationship as in former good days.
After this 50 step program during these 7 weeks of consolation we enter a 3 week period commencing on Rosh HaShannah This journey brings us to the brink of Sh’mini Atzeret when G-d wants to be solely with Ahm Yisrael after being with the whole world;in effect reversing the sequence of events during the 3 weeks spanning the 17th of Tammuz to Tish’a b’Av.
This is the time for renewal and rejuvenation on all levels – let’s take full advantage of this opportunity!
