R’ Shlomo on Purim: Wiping Out Evil – Today’s Weapons

Mar 18th, 2011 by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Holidays
We say ‘Tshuasam Hayisa Lanetzach’. Chassidim say this means that G-d

is always giving us strength to be the winner of the war. ‘Vesikvosom Bechol Dor Vador’, because every generation has another fight, every generation has other hopes.

I’ll tell you something very strong, the old Bobover Rebbe said something very holy.

He says that there were great tremendous heroes who knew how to duel.

Today we fight atomic weapons, even that is already a joke today because we are much further than that.

But imagine, a great hero from the twelfth century who is mamesh top man dueling will come to the world and say ‘listen brother, I’m going to bring peace. Just give me a sword brother, I’m going to show them’. It’s very sweet but that is not where it’s today.

So the Bobover says that there were a lot of tzaddikim who knew how to duel evil but nebech, that was in the twelfth century. They might have known how to bring peace in their time but today we have different weapons. Therefore, as much as tzaddikim in former generations were so holy, in every generation there are new weapons. So every generation must train new tzaddikim to know how to fight the weapons of today.

Holy words from the Bobover Rebbe.

  • And what are the weapons that we need to develop to fight today’s weapons? How should the tzaddikim be trained today?

    That’s a very good question.

Heaven forfend that I would put words in R’ Shlomo’s mouth, but I would look to a central theme in his actions. And there actually is a connection to the M’gillah.

When we see in the M’gillah that Haman, and conversely Esther and Mordechai, wished to affect the decrees – they sent out communications to the far-reaching corners of the kingdom.

R’ Shlomo was trying to spread the message by trying to access as many places, near and far, far and near as he could personally reach. And when that wasn’t possible, he racked up incredible phone bills calling all over the world.

Although he left the world ‘only’ sixteen years ago, it is instructive to consider that was before ready access to cellphones and certainly web communication did not exist.

In today’s world the ‘weapons’ needed are the harnessing of mass communication to battle the swelling tide of ignorance and indifference and loneliness that is engulfing the world on both the macro and micro level.
