Twenty-two years ago, Dr. Rosalind Neuman of St. Louis pointed out in a class on this week’s portion a remarkable transition from the beginning of the portion to its conclusion.
The portion begins by describing how God did not want the Jews to experience or even witness war, lest it frighten them. The portion ends as Israel actually battles Amalek.
The people changed.
Dr Neuman posited that the name of the portion “Beshalach” means that Israel was sent out to grow, almost as a child being sent to take its first steps.
