Elul

The primary verse associated with Elul is “Ani L’dodi, v’dodi li”, – “I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me.” (Song of Songs 6:4)

Targum Yonatan understands this verse as a description of God reaching out to us, and making Himself accessible to us, no matter where we are. God gives us the ability to bring His Presence into our lives and world.

Elul is a month of heightened awareness as we prepare for Rosh Hashana. The awareness must be one that enhances our connection and allows us to experience God reaching out to us, and the ability to make His Presence a very real part of our lives.

Another acronym of Elul is the verse segment from the Megilla of Esther “Ish L’rei’ei’hu U’matanot La’evyonim” relating 2 of the mitzvot of Purim = Sending food parcels one to another and the giving of gifts to the needy.
Elul is surely a time of increasing closeness of Man to The One Above; however, Chaz”l are also underscoring the importance of each one of us seeking to mend relationships down here in the corporeal world.

  • Which is why I plan, with Hashem’s help, to write a series on Asking Forgiveness during Elul. Unless, of course, my holy and righteous friend would honor us by writing it himself.
