When we turn everything into a numbers game (i.e. he who dies with more possessions,wins),we are joining Eisav’s camp of ‘yesh li rav’. Eisav isn’t looking to better the world thru accumulation – his possessions are meaningless as he is always looking for MORE. Any meaningful acquisition is just another meaningless number. (CHaZ”L correlate to the Nakhash, the Snake who is cursed ‘v’ahfar to’chal col y’mei khayecha’ and you shall eat dust all the days of your life ==> even if the snake eats the most exquisite food, it’ll always taste like dust).

However, when we instill meaning even into the most mundane things we escape this Eisav trap. One way to accomplish this is to recognize the connection of every bit of creation to The Creator. Another way is to realize that other people can serve G-d in paths that differ from yours or that they’re personalizing the same path as yours in their stamp. l’culam sheimot yikra.
