Timeless: The Unexpected
Sep 15th, 2009 by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg in Spiritual Growth
“It is as difficult for God to provide for all our immediate needs as it was for Him to split the Sea.” (Pesachim 118a)
Just as the Splitting of the Sea was a miracle of the totally unexpected, so too, our needs are provided from a place that is completely hidden and unforeseen. (The Chozeh of Lublin)
We face the coming year with a sense of mystery: Who knows what to expect? We focus on the verses of Zichronot – Timeless Connections – in order to recall how we have always survived on the unanticipated and startling surprises sent by God.

How appropriate is it that the Chozeh of Lublin, the Holy Seer who ‘could see from one end of the world to the other’ is the Rebbe who is giving over the torah of the unexpected!!
Perhaps the deeper message is directed at our sensibilities. To paraphrase an ancient cartoon “Expect the unexpected”- before G-d there is no unexpected!!!
‘HaCol tzafui, v’harashoot n’tuna.’ could be boomeranged back towards our understanding of how G-d runs the world- we (Man) should expect everything knowing that G-d’s authority/domain is running the world.
A message of humility abounds. Each one of us hopes and seeks our individual pathway to serving G-d. Many times our plans are diverted towards a different result. However, surely G-d directed that result!! That being the case, what transpired was truly G-d’s will – what G-d really really wanted(omek r’tzon HaShem, courtesy of the Holy Izhbitser Rebbe). Therefore, when this happens, we should accept the different result with equanimity and understanding that G-d is sending us a message that there is more than one valid way to serve G-d.
