“God, your Lord, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring.” (Deuteronomy 30:6) The first letters of “your heart and the heart of your offspring” spell Elul.

It only takes one second for a person to change. Change is not a skill reserved for the most pious or holy. It is available to, and possible and essential for each human being.

A person who believes that he cannot change in an instant will never be able to change. The moment to change will never come, for he does not understand that such moments are possible.

Why does he not change? Because he feels unable to leave his current path at this moment. The second and third moments will follow in turn and he will not change.

The moment is now.

Madreigat HaAdam, Volume I, Page 152

The month of Elul is a month of individual moments, each with a special promise of change. God will circumcise our hearts so that we will be open to each of these moments.

In Dancing 2: Forgiveness R’ Simcha quotes the gmara:”Ulla Bira’ah said in the name of R. Eleazar: In the days to come the Holy One, blessed be He, will hold a chorus for the righteous and He will sit in their midst in the Garden of Eden and every one of them will point with his finger towards Him, as it is said, And it shall be said in that day: Lo, this is our God, for whom we waited, that He might save us; this is the Lord for whom we waited, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.(Ta’anit 31a)”.

Rabi Akiva Eiger is quoted in his grandson R’ Leibele Eiger’s sefer Torat Emet in a piece on TU b’Av referring to the gmara above:Actually, G-d will be at the exact center of the circle with each tzaddik equidistant on the perimeter. Whereas in this world, each tzaddik has his own unique way of serving G-d and never the twain shall meet; in future good days it will be revealed that each of these unique paths in the Service of G-d are ALL ONE TRUTH and there is no dichotomy.

Perhaps we’ll know that Moshiach is truly on the way when our great tzaddikim can convince their followers that the other tzaddikim’s paths are equally legitimate.

Or, to quotr R’ Shlomo – there is no OTHER way -it’s ALL ONE.
