His father is 98 years old. The father usually does not remember his son’s name, or even that he is his son. The old man thinks of himself as a teenager in the small Canadian village where he was raised.

My eyes teared when I heard, but my friend smiled: “He is 98 years old. He cannot see. He can barely walk. But he is happy in the world he remembers. He lived a blessed life and that is all he can recall at this stage of life. I think he’s very lucky.”

That’s why he’s my friend.

R’ Shlomo taught: “What’s the difference between ‘yofi’ and ‘chein’=> beauty and charm (inner beauty)? Once,he was giving a concert in Haifa. In the front row sat the newly elected Miss Israel. Truly, R’ Shlomo said, she was very beautiful. However,Miss Israel’s friend, sitting next to her was totally mesmerizing outshining Miss Israel. She was just so so overjoyed to be there with her friend.”

Friends are just that, because it’s not about them.

R’ Shlomo gave over during the week of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s passing: “Before Moshiach is coming, there’ll be no more Rebbes, there’ll oniy be good friends. Please let me be your friend.”

  • Could there have been a better friend than the Holy Reb Shlomo, other than our Ultimate Friend; Hashem?
